Wallander: testament to Kenneth Branagh's greatness

Monday, December 1, 2008, 05:35 PM GMT [General]

The first episode of Wallander has been a palpable hit with both TV critics and the public, despite its daft central narrative about a deranged teenager scalping politicians. This is for one reason and one reason only. Not, as literary enthusiasts might hope, because of the towering significance of Swedish author Henning Mankell, whose Wallander detective novels have been best-sellers the world over. A quick straw pole of my friends and neighbours revealed scant knowledge of the books, sadly.

No, people are watching this programme because of the oddly hypnotic pulling power of its star Kenneth Branagh. Branagh's not a looker, that's been oft remarked upon, but examining his face in close-up, as the Wallander cameras did for much of the 90 minutes duration of yesterday's opening episode, proves a remarkably rewarding experience. Every tic, every furrow of human agony becomes oddly interesting when Ken Branagh's doing it. If viewers first turned their tvs on to see quite what had attracted this great stage actor (and highly erratic movie director) back to the small screen, they stayed because Branagh can make the prospensity to burst into tears every five minutes as compelling as true-life tragedy.

As Wallander's storylines get ever more mental (and believe me, they will) it will fall to Branagh single-handedly to make them all believable. A challenge at which he may well triumph.

    Do I Detect another Leak?

The EU Presidente, Borroso said, 'I'm not going to break a confidentiality of certain conversations, but some British politicians have already told me if we'd had the euro we would have been better off. I know that the majority in Britain are opposed, but there is a period of consideration under way

    The Baker's Girl 30 november 2008

    Monday, December 1, 2008, 11:25 AM [Poetry]

    The Baker's Girl 30 November 2008

    Baker's notes
    Do many things
    They skid or fly
    They dance or skip
    They climb or tap
    Feel the mood
    Enhance the mood
    Manipulate & soothe
    Raw or slow & smooth
    Fill the room
    Stop the time
    Break the count and
    All in rhyme
    Syncopate
    Illuminate
    The crevices of my
    Soul
    Take the parts
    And make it whole
    (Do I dare to bebop
    a bop here?)
    Make me wait
    I hesitate
    Sing out here or
    Here?
    Baker's beat
    Tap my feet
    Sing of sweet
    & soft
    Feed me back
    To health
    Nutritious
    Wholemeal
    Musical munching
    And a lovely
    Baker's girl
    I met last month...

They obviously think we are stupid

Monday, December 1, 2008, 05:25 PM GMT [General]

Early this morning on the BBC website, they published a story that we are close to joining the euro. President Baruso claims that due to the economic crisis it would be an advantage to Britain to join the Euro. Whitehall denied the allegation, but as the BBC are the mouthpiece of this dire government, then who knows.

    I'm a Celebrity: Martina's ace

Monday, December 1, 2008, 05:25 PM GMT [General]

Martina Navratilova won't win this contest, but she's the only winner in it.

Among the small if sweet talents of those that surround her - Esther Rantzen's for being a good old stick, really; Brian Paddick's for his heartfelt if largely ineffective efforts to make peace among the camp's bickerers; David Van Day's for being THE MOST IRRITATING PERSON ON THE PLANET - the rather huge fact that Navritalova is one of the greatest tennis players in history is looming large in camp.

It isn't talked about. It's just that everyone wants to please Martina. Even Nicola, whose general bitchiness suggests she doesn't seem to give much of a hoot whether the public likes her (though, considerately, she has chosen to forgo the greater support offered by a sports bra for a contraption that is more revealing of her large frontal assets) wants to impress Martina.

That was her main concern when she and Martina did that daft swinging challenge for the latest celebrity chest last night. It is also Brian's main concern whenever he attempts (and fails) to make a decision about any camp-related business.

When the news came out that Timmy Mallett had dug his claws into Brian during the Bushtucker trial it was Martina's pronouncement that she had never ever cheated in any match she'd played - and she'd played a lot of matches - that condemned Timmy to the ranks of the truly shamed.

Whether viewers warm to her as a person or not Martina's got the one thing so signally lacking among all the other competitors who have ever appeared on I'm a Celebrity - the ability to command respect.

    Cena's back

Monday, December 1, 2008, 12:23 PM EST [General]

Well it been a while since i posted anything, for the last Couple of months I've had a 2 and ahalf year old walking around the house telling me John Cena has a boo boo and John Cena's coming back.  And with last Sunday now he's walking around saying Cena's backs.

Yes i have created a monster it doesn't matter where me and my family are if my oldest gets a hint that something wrestling is around he goes nuts.  When he see's USA commercials he goes crazy thinking that it wrestling is on and when we watch raw and it goes to commercial my wife and I have to explain to him that it will be back on.  He has also started carring his wrestling figures around with him in a little toolbox everywhere we go.  This young boy is becoming one of the wwe ultimate fans. His brother on the other hand is only 4 months old and just got into staring at the tv, But  I know sooner than later they'll both be going nuts over wrestling.

    Freemasonry and America

Monday, December 1, 2008, 05:21 PM GMT [General]

Freemasonry and America are siamese twins. They are conjoined at the hips.To be rich and powerful in the USA,you either have to be a Conservative Christian or a Freemason. The American war of Independence was  predicated on the antics of the Freemasons.Britain had abolished most of the Townshend Act,but had retained the Tea duties.Benjamin Franklin and his fellow Masons dressed as Mohawk Indians had dumped Tea in the Boston Harbour. The Great man himself,George Washington was a grandmaster in the society. The American Constitution, itself was not spared from the long and overreaching arms of the organisation. The words"we hold this truths to be sacred" was changed to "we hold this truths to be self evident".The original words had offended the agnostic beliefs of the Masons .Most Presidents that came after George Washington owed their meteoric rise to the Masons. It is said that all Vice Presidents of America belonged to a shadowy club known as the Bones and skull. J.F.Kennedy belonged to the club. But this did not save him from assassination.F.D.R belonged to the old man's club.In Britain,it is common place among the Aristocracy. The head of the Masonic lodge in the UK happens to be the Duke of Kent,a relation to the Queen.Harold Macmillan, the Tory Prime Minister was a member. He had an "open relationship" with his wife. She had a series of  affairs. One with a labour Member of Parliament. The result was an illegitimate daughter called Dorothy. The Freemasons rule the world. For worse,I fear.Freemasonry for me?.Not on your nelly!.

BRIT UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH GLAMOUR

    Photobucket

In January's Glamour, Britney Spears opens up about her "crazy year," her new album Circus and her future.  "The whole year has been a hell of a year for me," she says, referring to her forced psychiatric hospitalizations, loss of custody of her two sons and infamous head shaving.

Recording her latest album Circus - which drops Tuesday on her 27th birthday - "has helped take my mind off certain things," she says. "For me, my music is therapy."  The singer - who made her first live performance Wednesday in Germany since her rocky 2007 MTV Video Music Awards stint - also admits she "didn't know exactly where I stood with everyone" after the past year.

"When I received the awards and [the audience] stood for me, it showed me how much love is out there," says Spears, who swept the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards.

Her life is calmer these days, she says.  "I don't like going out. I hate clubs. I hate being around too many people," the singer tells Glamour. "I love my home and staying in bed and watching Dancing With the Stars or reading a Danielle Steel novel. I'm kind of boring."

She's also been hitting the gym.  On her post-baby body, Spears says, "My body...completely changed [after giving birth], and I have had to work hard at getting it back."

This sophisticated lady, Las Vegas cocktail waitress Caroline Pal, is the latest in a string of women who have captivated the heart of Olympic hero Michael Phelps. And she's not just another notch on his bedpost: Mike took this one home to spend Thanksgiving with his family. We can only hope she swapped out that tired black belt for something more festive and bedazzled.

    The imitable Malcolm Gladwell

Monday, December 1, 2008, 05:20 PM GMT [General]

Claims that the journalist Malcolm Gladwell has "rock-star status" are usually predicated on his ability to attract gig-sized paying audiences. But he has also done well on a more traditional measure of literary profile: parodies.

His last book, Blink: the Power of Thinking without Thinking, was trailed into the market by Noah Tall's Blank: the Power of not Actually Thinking at All. (Amazon has 1p copies of Blank in its secondary market, which suggests that it may not quite have equalled Blink's success.)

Gladwell's latest, Outliers, has attracted a still greater accolade. I don't mean a blog post by Robert Colvile; I mean a competition on BBC 6Music's Adam and Joe. Adam Buxton and Joe Cornish, for those of you who haven't come across them, are a pair of extremely bright pop-cultural parodists and comedians, and books are not one of their usual hunting grounds. They asked listeners to send them Gladwell-style pitches: big ideas with a hint of self-help.

My favourite was probably one of their initial examples - "Lamp: the Power of Hitting People" - but one of the later listener offerings - "Dosh: Why It's Good to Have Lots of Money" - was very close. You'll have to listen to their podcast for a proper run-down, but then listening to their podcast is a good thing in itself.

    UC Monday stuff

Monday, December 1, 2008, 12:18 PM EST [Bearcats]

I asked Brian Kelly about the Seattle Times report that he'd be interviewing for the Washington job this week:

"Let's see, that would go along with the Tennessee job and the Clemson job, again, I think all these are issues that come up when you're winning. Your name is going to be thrown around. There's nothing I can do to control what information gets out there. All I can tell you is that my focus is on the regular season, I've said that from Day 1 and that's my intention and that's what I'm sticking with."

"We talk to our team -- what we talk behind closed doors, obviously isn't what we talk about publically. They know what my intentions are and they're the only ones that really need to know that, because nobody else is distracted. If the players are distracted, the coaches are. So, we know what's going on. The rest of the stuff, I can't control what people talk about or write about. It's flattering my name is out there for these jobs because these are high-profile jobs that are looking to be successful. We like to be on that side of it, but our football team and our football coaches are really not distracted by this by any stretch of the imagination. We're focused on the next game."

    * On the Hawaii game: "When you're looking at the development of your program, for me playing 13 games in year two wasn't going to be a guarantee, playing 12 was. Playing in a bowl game wasn't a guaranttee, so we try to take as many games -- Milke Thomas and I -- for the development of our program. That's why we looked at a 13th game in year two."

The NCAA allows an exception for a 13th game for teams willing to travel to Hawaii.

"We won the Big East championship, if we had to do it all over again would we say, OK maybe we don't need to play Hawaii? That's possible. But we were building their program knowing we wanted to bring in private investors in our program and continue to play our football team and 13 games in year two sounded like the right thing to do at the time."

"It's 32 degrees here and I think it's in the 80s, so that's always helps the attitude."

    * Also, Jake Rodgers is the Big East Special Teams Player of the Week for his three field goals against Syracuse.
